How come large military starships such as heavy cruisers and dreadnoughts don't have external mass accelerator cannon turrets?

Most heavy warships have the mass acclerators built into the hull itself. Since longer magnetic rails can impart more speed to a projectile, the main cannon is built on the longest axis of the ship: from bow to stern. Of course, some dreadnoughts make use of broadside batteries (e.g. the Alliance's Kilimanjaro-class ships), but even then the cannons are built in the ship itself and run lengthwise under the ship's hull.
